Last week, we shared some Security Tips for Travelers to help those leaving their home traveling to help vacationing homeowners secure their properties this season. In that post, we shared tips that add security against threats such as burglary, fire, and even weather-related emergencies that might pop up during an extended absence. All of the tips shared in last week’s post help you secure your home itself and everything inside of it. This week, we turn our attention to creating exterior security as the weather heats up. In this post, we share some valuable tips to aid you with securing your yard this summer.
First, we’ll show you how wireless alarm sensors can add unique exterior security. This includes securing the perimeter of your home, as well as possible imortant structures such as pools or sheds and detached garages. Then, we’ll share how exterior panic buttons can help you add security in case something goes wrong while you are outside. From there, we’ll detail a couple smart camera-related ways to keep eyes on your property at all times. This section will include an overall look at smart cameras. Moreover, we’ll also discuss the security you can add by installing doorbell cameras. Now, let’s dive in with a look at adding exterior security through the use of wireless alarm sensors!
Using the Latest Wireless Alarm Technology to Your Advantage
When we install any security system, we generally install security contacts that utilize wireless alarm technology. Decades ago, we had to run wires from a central control panel to each and every alarm sensor. However, wireless technology has made this need a thing of the past. Instead, we now install sensors that speak to the alarm panel using radio frequency (or “RF”) technology.
In the past these sensors had some limitations. For starters, older wireless sensors utilized “AAA” batteries for power. These days, we use lithium batteries that often last upwards of 5 years to minimize how often you have to swap them! Additionally, older wireless alarm sensors used to have a somewhat limited range. This would make it difficult to secure larger homes, where range could create an issue. However, we’ve seen this problem addressed as well. Today’s wireless security devices have superior range, allowing us to secure almost any location without any issues. Specifically, our preferred “Power G” sensors created by DSC have the longest range of any wireless sensors on the market!

Installing panic buttons in your yard can create an emergency response during a dangerous situation.
With this new technology comes added security potential for securing your yard this summer. In fact, we can now add weatherproof sensors to outdoor locations to help secure your perimeter. Wireless door sensors make a great way to secure fences, sheds, and pool gates! We’ve surprised many customers with the opportunity to add alarm equipment outside of their home. These sensors add tremendous security, and can notify you any time an exterior contact is breached, even when your alarm is disarmed! Let’s now see how exterior panic buttons can provide valuable security!
Placing Panic Devices Outdoors
Panic buttons play an important role in any complete home security plan. We offer many panic button designs, some of which we detailed in our Panic Button Options for Your Security System. We can program panic buttons to create any type of police, ambulance, or fire department response our customers desire. For exterior security purposes, we would generally program panic buttons to call an ambulance. Our waterproof panic buttons can be worn in the form of wristbands or pendants. This allows us to install panic buttons in set locations or hand them out so that people can wear them if desired.
For example, homeowners can hang panic buttons near the sides of a pool. This can allow younger pool users to use these buttons to call for help if a dangerous situation arises. On the other hand, elderly family members often wear these devices within the confines of their yard in case of a fall. Having the ability to create an alarm response to events that happen outside the house goes a long way towards securing your yard this summer. Upon activation of a panic button, our central station will respond with an ambulance dispatch if necessary, and the alarm panel inside will start beeping to let anyone in the house know about the issue. Let’s move on with a close look at adding smart camera-based security to your property.
Installing Smart Camera Security
Smart cameras, such as our preferred models powered by Alarm.com, solve many issues that keep some people from installing cameras in their home. For starters, these cameras generally come with a very digestible price point. Although camera pricing has generally dropped across the board, smart camera pricing still has a leg up on just about any hardwired camera from a price point perspective. Moreover, these cameras generally store video to the cloud via wifi technology. This means that you do not have to purchase a recorder to install smart cameras. Since the recorder often makes up a significant chunk of the overall cost of a camera system, this can make installing these cameras quite a bit less expensive than their hardwired counterparts. Let’s look at a couple different types of cameras available for helping you in securing your yard this summer.
Smart Security Cameras
Our smart camera customers experience several unique security features. Like any cameras, smart cameras provide the ability to both deter crime and to help you solve any crime that occurs on your property. Additionally, smart cameras also provide many benefits that traditional security cameras do not.
For example, these cameras can send a live video notification to your phone upon detecting motion. This allows you to check in on any issues you may experience in real time. As an added bonus, our Alarm.com smart cameras also feature the power of video analytics. This allows your cameras to recognize the difference between motion caused by a person, an animal, or a vehicle. In turn, this makes it easier for you to create effective video searches when looking to find video of a particular event. Next up, we’ll take a look at another smart video device that provides specialized security for your entrances.

Installing a video doorbell allows you to view and communicate with visitors to your home.
Doorbell Cameras
Doorbell cameras add a tremendous amount of security to any entrance where you install them. For starters, doorbell cameras record motion-based clips of anyone who approaches your door, just like the smart cameras we described above. If desired, you can have live motion-based clips sent to your phone as soon as the cameras detect motion. Your video clips remain stored in the cloud for reference in case they do capture any suspicious or illegal activity. This obviously adds significant security to your property’s entry points.
Furthermore, audio-enabled smart doorbell cameras allow you to communicate with visitors who ring your doorbell. Activation of your smart doorbell will create a live video alert on your smartphone. This alert prompts you to have a conversation with anyone who rings your doorbell. The added security and convenience offered by these doorbells make them an extremely popular security addition for any application. Similarly to our smart camera offerings, we recommend installing Alarm.com video doorbell products.
