Over our 36-plus years in the industry, we’ve helped over a thousand businesses create security plans. More often than not, developing these plans involves taking a multi-faceted approach using many different types of security equipment. Over the past couple decades, the advent and development of wireless security technology has made installing this security more efficient than ever. We can now install various security devices more quickly than ever. Moreover, we can also do so at a more efficient price point than when we install hardwired equipment. For this reason, we recommend taking the wireless approach whenever possible. In particular, small businesses often prove the perfect place to install this equipment. After all, large businesses and warehouse settings can make wireless communication difficult. However, smaller commercial spaces do not have this issue. In today’s post, we share some of our most effective wire-free security measures for small businesses.

First, we’ll show you how you can also install wireless access control systems. These systems form the base of many successful security plans, and the advent of wireless access control options have made installing this equipment more efficient than ever. From there, we’ll shift our focus to the wireless alarm equipment that we use whenever possible in small businesses. Wireless alarm equipment has helped us easily secure more areas of our customers’ businesses than ever before. Finally, we’ll wrap up with a look at adding valuable smart camera security on your property. Surveillance systems provide some of the best commercial security available. The smart cameras we will show you have unique security features that fit small businesses perfectly. Now, let’s dive in and see how wireless access control systems can help secure your small business!

Unique Access Control Options

In our previous post on Access Control Options, we spelled out the different ways that companies create access control for their business. This security measure involves using electronic locking hardware to operate specific doors within a business. Rather than using a key at these doors, users approach a keypad or a reader installed outside the door. Then, they present either a code or a physical credential such as a card, a fob, or even their cell phone to gain entry. Users who present an approved credential will then be able to open the door after the reader interacts with the door’s electronics to unlock it. Business owners can assign each credential to open only certain doors at specific times, giving them tremendous control over who can open which doors, and when.

In the past, we’d run wiring from each and every access control door to a main controller. This obviously proves exceptionally difficult in some situations. Luckily, Wi-fi-enabled controllers and door equipment now allow the pieces of an access control system to communicate with each other wirelessly. Additionally, many of these Wi-fi-based systems also allow for remote control over your system. This means that you can control your access doors while offsite with a smartphone app. This includes locking and unlocking doors, as well as adding and deleting user codes when needed. Obviously, this represents one of the most effective and convenient wire-free security measures for small businesses. Now, let’s take a close look at adding wireless alarm devices to your suite of security products.

Wireless Alarm Equipment

Wireless alarm systems have been in vogue for 2-3 decades now, so they are no longer the “new technology” that they were at the turn of the century. Now that these systems have fully immersed themselves within the industry, it’s easier to more accurately judge their advantages and disadvantages. The biggest and most obvious advantage to these systems lies in the ease of installation. When a contact or sensor can communicate to the control panel wirelessly, we can design a system for the best security possible without having to worry about opening walls to get wires to tough sensor locations. Large business applications can prove too large for a consistent wireless signal transmission from each sensor back to the main alarm panel. However, smaller businesses provide a perfect setting for us to take advantage of this technology.

Of course, wireless alarm installation allows us to install alarms in much less time than we would need to complete a hardwired installation. As we touched on before, this wireless technology also allows us to install contacts in places where running a wire could prove difficult or even impossible. This gives us more freedom with sensor placement. Finally, installing wireless systems generally saves customers money. While wireless alarm components on their own cost more than their hardwired counterparts, this potential savings generally gets eliminated once we charge for the time it takes to hardwire a system. For this reason, we install wireless alarms when customers want to watch their bottom line. Next up, let’s take a see how wireless surveillance technology can help secure your small business.

Alarm.com cameras represent one of the most efficient and effective ways to add surveillance to your small business.

Smart Cameras

Surveillance systems have exploded in popularity over the past couple decades, and for good reason. A camera system serves multiple purposes. For one, well-placed cameras will capture and store footage of any crime that occurs on site. This provides security, as well as peace of mind for both employees and customers alike. In addition, connecting a surveillance system to your network also allows you to check in on your business with a computer or smartphone at any time. This provides the type of easy access to your business that small business owners demand.

Traditionally, installing cameras requires purchasing a recorder to store video footage. We then would wire each camera back to the recorder itself to transmit this video. While certainly effective, the equipment involved, combined with the installation labor, can make this a costly endeavor. Smart cameras, such as our preferred models powered by Alarm.com, solve many issues that keep some people from installing cameras in their business.

For starters, these cameras generally come with a very digestible price point. Smart cameras still have a leg up on just about any hardwired camera from a price point perspective. Moreover, these cameras generally store video to the cloud via your Wi-fi. This means that you do not have to purchase a recorder to install smart cameras. The recorder often makes up the most significant chunk of the overall cost of a camera system. Therefore, eliminating it can make installing these cameras quite a bit less expensive than their hardwired counterparts. Installing these affordable, user-friendly cameras can add tremendous security to any business!
